Principal's Message

Dear Families,

Welcome Back to a new school year!  We hope that all of you enjoyed a wonderful summer. We had beautiful weather, and I hope that you had a great time enjoying the outdoors and sunshine!

My name is Deb Woods, and I am honoured to be your Principal and member of your school community this year. This will be my twentieth year as an educator and my second school as an Elementary Principal.  Most of my years of experience are with the Ottawa Carleton District School Board and I love my job!

Over the summer we have had a few updates to our staffing and are thrilled to welcome the following staff to our team:  welcome back Francine deMartigny and Katherine Ryan to the intermediate team after a year away. We welcome Glenda Davies (Yellow Room - Kindergarten), John Harder (Intermediate), Karen Reyburn (Intermediate), and Sally Abdel-Ghani (RECE - Purple Room), Liza Hogel (Eng Grade 1/2), Amanda Hartwell (for Larissa Jennings), France Michaud (for Kaylee K), Danielle Mailhot (Caroline Denis), and welcome back to Tam Casey (Office Assistant).  We are very excited to have them joining our team!

To support our students this year we have introduced the use of agendas for grades 1-8. We are collecting a $5.00 voluntary fee to cover the cost of the agendas.

Our week was full of excitement and loads of fun.  The school looks great and is full of the sounds of children renewing friendships, meeting new friends, and staff. They explored their classrooms and playground, anxious to begin another sensational year at Roberta Bondar Public School. Thank you to our Chief Custodian, Jeffrey Ott, and his team for having the building in tip top shape for the start of the year. It looks great!

Again this year, we have students with life-threatening anaphylaxis and therefore we respectfully request that all students do not bring nut products to school.  Although we cannot safely maintain a totally nut-free environment, we do all we can to maintain nut-free classrooms in those homeroom classes with anaphylactic students.  More information regarding our policy and procedure is available on our school board’s website:  Please refer to this website if you have any questions and feel free to call me at the school should you require further clarification.

Just a reminder only eligible children are allowed to ride the bus.  If you have any questions about your child being able to ride our school bus to and from school, please contact the office.  Empty seat applications are available online at Our empty seats will be decided in October and are determined by a variety of factors (ie distance, age, and siblings etc…). For further information please check our Empty Seat Policy found at

Regarding your child’s safety during morning and afternoon pick-up and drop-off, we ask that all students walking to school are dropped off in the yard at 8:45am when supervision starts.  If you must drive your child to school we ask that you park at the church across the street and walk them to yard via the crosswalk, or use the Kiss & Ride at the front.

In an effort to be environmentally friendly we will be posting most of our communication on the school website, or sending information home through School Messenger emails.  Please be sure to update your contact information with the school to ensure you have the latest communication about all of our school activities and learning ventures. Along the same lines with being environmentally friendly, the office will no longer supply plastic spoons or forks to students. Please make sure your child(ren) has appropriate utensils in their lunch.

I am proud to be Principal of Roberta Bondar PS and am looking forward to a wonderful year of learning and activities.  We are off to a great start and we are committed to providing a safe, caring, challenging and fun learning environment for all our students.
