Roberta Bondar - January 2020 - Connecting School and Home

Happy New Year! Welcome back to all our parents and students. We are excited to be back at school and learning together.  Our Canadian winters have so much to offer and we do our best to make sure students play outside each day.  We follow the OCDSB policy and procedures for extreme weather and thank you in advance for ensuring that your child has the appropriate winter clothing with them daily.  This includes having a pair of indoor shoes that are appropriate for the classroom and gymnasium.

Ms. Nicoll is Retiring

It’s with mixed emotions that we announce the retirement of Ms. Nicoll.  After a 31 year teaching career, 24 of which were spent in the ‘Green Room’ at Roberta Bondar, Ms. Barbara Nicoll will be retiring at the end of January.  Ms Nicoll has taught over 1500 children in her distinguished career, and those of you who had a child(ren) in her class, or perhaps were once in her class yourselves, will remember the kindness, love, and dedication she displayed towards each of her students. We are sad to say farewell to Ms Nicoll, and we wish her all the best for a well-earned retirement.

Parent Toolbox:

As a staff we are always learning about self – regulation: to monitor and manage one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviour.  Self - regulation is the ability to understand how we feel, to label and manage our feelings, to manage our stress levels in our environment, and how to recover from a stressful situation. In our Connecting School and Home updates we will share ideas to support students in their development of self - regulation skills and explain how these skills work within the 5 different areas that we experience in our daily lives: biological, emotional, cognitive, social, pro-social.  We will explore these areas in our next update. In the Neighbourhood

Thank you to Gloucester Presbyterian Church!  Before our winter break our neighbourhood church hosted Music in Greenboro featuring Tom Allen (CBC) will be hosting a special reading of A Christmas Carol.  The event was a huge success and we are grateful to the church for their generosity in donating the proceeds to Bondar’s Breakfast Program.

Drop-Off and Pick-up

Thank you to all the parents who have been making such efficient use of our morning Kiss ‘n’ Ride. Students are quickly exiting the passenger side with their backpacks ready and assisting their younger siblings: your cooperation is noted and appreciated!  We appreciate all the parents who park at the church across the street to walk their children to school.

A reminder that parking and stopping is not permitted on the street during AM arrival and PM dismissal times, and City of Ottawa Bylaw does enforce this regulation.

Please make every effort to bring your child(ren) to school before 8:55, as the Kiss ‘n’ Ride becomes very congested after this time, causing backups on Lorry Greenberg and   resulting in late arrival for students.

Finally, we appreciate the effort made to ensure your child(ren) arrive before 9:00 AM daily. Punctuality is a life skill that supports future success in school and beyond.

Lost and Found Week

The lost and found will be on display in the Rotunda for the week of January 27 - 31. All classes will visit the Lost and Found, and parents are invited to visit before or afterschool. All unclaimed items after this date will be donated to a local charity.

Labour Negotiations Updates

Please continue to check your email for updates from the OCDSB on the status of ongoing labour negotiations, and the impact these Provence-wide negotiations will have on schools in the OCDSB.

All past updates are available at the District website, at https://www.ocdsb.ca/about_us/labour_negotiations

If you are not receiving these, please contact the school at 613-736-7334 between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM so we can update your contact information.
