Bondar Update (December 16, 2020)
Posted on 12/16/2020

Dear Bondarians:

As the final week of school for 2020 draws to a close, we would like to thank our parent community for all your support through this year. We hope that you will be able to take time to unplug and relax with your family. We look forward to welcoming your child(ren) back to school on Monday, January 4, 2021. Please note that the school office will be closed from December 19 - January 3, and emails/phone messages will not be monitored during this time.

On behalf of the entire staff, Happy Holidays and all the best for 2021!

Food Drive

Roberta Bondar's annual food drive wrapped up today. We are still counting the totals received, but have over 30 boxes of food and over $2700.00 contributed! We are humbled by your generosity, and it is a powerful lesson for students to show that even in challenging times we can always reach out to help those in need. Thanks to Ms Kelly and the Grade 7 and 8 Student Council for all their work organizing this Food Drive.

Celebrating the Holidays: Reminders From Ottawa Public Health (OPH)

OPH continues to recommend keeping the number of people you interact with limited to those in your household plus essential supports such as a caregiver. If you live alone (single parent, student, etc.), one or two contacts outside your home can be important social supports to draw on.  Holidays and celebrations are going to look and feel different during the COVID-19 pandemic. All individuals should assess their own level of risk, and the health of every person in their household, when deciding how to celebrate. If anyone in your household is at higher risk from COVID-19, everyone should choose lower risk activities to keep them safe. The OPH website has a page with information and tips on how to minimize risk during the holiday season and year round: https://www.ottawapublichealth.ca/en/public-health-topics/hosting-postponing-or-cancelling-mass-gatherings.aspx

Scientists in the Schools

Thank you to the Roberta Bondar School Council and the National Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) for your support and sponsorship of the Scientists in School program at Roberta Bondar this year. Every class at Roberta Bondar from Kindergarten to Grade 8 has either hosted - or will soon be hosting - a hands-on workshop of grade appropriate science and technology experiments, led by a science or engineering specialist. Due to COVID 19 safety protocols, these workshops are conducted via a remote connection, but every student is provided with their own supply of hands-on materials so they can conduct their own experiments.

Family Science Night: Coming Soon

As part of (NSERC)‘s sponsorship of Roberta Bondar school, in partnership with the Bondar School Council, we will be hosting a virtual ‘Family Science Night’ in February. Some of you may remember our past Family Science Nights, when the gym was filled with different hands-on experiment stations, and families moved from station to station performing experiments and taking part in engineering challenges. This year, Family Science Night will be online, but every family that signs-up to participate will receive a kit of supplies in the mail, so they can participate from home. Details on how to register for Family Science Night will be sent home in early January.
