Bondar November 2019 Update

Bondar November 2019 Update
Posted on 11/11/2019

Now that Progress Reports have gone home, we have settled into the academic work of First Term. Some parents have been invited to attend parent-teacher conferences on the evening of Thursday, November 14 and morning of Friday, November 15. Please note that parents are always welcome to contact their child(ren)’s teachers at any time throughout the school year, by phone or by email, to ask questions or discuss concerns.

Our Kindness initiative this year is to help the environment.  Therefore, we are selling water bottles. Our Bondar water bottles have a student designed logo on it and are being sold Friday November 15th, Tuesday November 19th and Wednesday November 20th.  You can purchase one for $8 or two for $15. Pls send exact change or a cheque made out to Roberta Bondar Public School.

Book Fair:

The School Council Book Fair is ongoing this evening (Thursday, November 14) from 4 pm - 6 PM, and tomorrow morning (Friday) from 9 am - 12 pm. Parents, and students accompanied by parents, are welcome to visit and purchase books. All proceeds from this event go to the School Council, to purchase resources and special events for the students at Roberta Bondar School.

School Council:

Our next school council meeting will be Thursday November 28, 2019 at 7pm, in the staff room.  All parents are welcome to attend.

Attendance and Appointments:

Please remember to phone, or email, the school office if your child(ren) will be away on a school day.  Sharing this information with us will allow for our safe arrival staff to cross check quickly and complete their phone calls in a timely manner.

Regarding appointments, we would like to help you get to your appointments on time.  Please put a note in your child’s agenda to ensure that their teacher is aware that they will be leaving early for the day. This notice helps our staff with having the student packed up ready to go and waiting at the office at the desired time.

Inclement Weather, or “Snow Days”:

Now that winter is here, school bus cancellations may occur when heavy snowfall or ice rain is expected. A couple of reminders around safety as this is a priority for everyone.

Transportation cancellations are posted on OSTA's website by 6:15 am. Transportation is cancelled for all school buses, vans and taxis when OSTA makes the decision to cancel student transportation for the day.

When transportation is cancelled due to bad weather or poor road conditions, schools remain open to students. If you bring your child to school, you must also arrange for transportation home.

IF YOUR CHILD(REN) STAY HOME WHEN TRANSPORTATION IS CANCELLED:

If your child comes to school on a yellow school bus or a specialized van, and busses are cancelled, you *do not* need to call the school to report an absence if your child stays home that day. If your child does *not* travel on a school bus, then please call or email the school to report your child(ren)’s absence on a snow day. The front office staff must call home for every child who does not take a school bus or van, and stays home when busses are cancelled.

Parking:

End-of-day parking at Roberta Bondar school is a challenge: the kiss’n ride circle is closed in order to safely load children on school busses, and city bylaws prohibit stopping or parking on the street in front of our school. Bylaw enforcement has recently been ticketing cars that park or stop on Lorry Greenburg.

We strongly encourage students to walk home if they can safely do so, either on their own or with an older sibling. If this is not an option, please park at Gloucester Presbyterian Church across the street (the church has generously opened their parking lot to Bondarians) and walk across to meet your child(ren).

Thanks for taking a few extra minutes to keep all Bondarians safe.
